In 2002, astronomers Karl Glazebrook and Ivan Baldry determined the average color of the universe through a series of studies which included a few erroneous depictions, the entirety of the series having included all possible variations. Circling the Drain is a series of 3D animations based on these different variations of the average color of the universe. The single channel work presented on KLAUSGALLERY.net plays off of this final averaged color, called “Cosmic Latte” (whose name was selected by the scientists though an open email poll). The hexadecimal RGB value for Cosmic Latte is #FFF8E7. Circling the Drain, the piece’s title, is colloquial medical expression used to describe a patient whose death is impending.
